Berlin woolwork - Animals

Birds – Mesange Charbonnière

This counted embroidery design is re-charted from an antique French pattern; which true to the taste of the time, portrays a rather gaudy and colorful version of our beloved garden friend - the Great Tit.

Delightful little embroidery pattern of a Spaniel resting on a luxurious cushion.

Queen Victoria was very fond of her dogs, and canine companion were a favorite embroidery motif of the time period.

Here is a little rhyme the queen wrote for her favorite Spaniel- Dash.

“Here lies Dash, the favorite spaniel of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, by whose command this memorial was erected. He died on the 20th December 1840 in his ninth year. His attachment was without selfishness, his playfulness without malice, his fidelity without deceit. Reader, if you would live beloved and die regretted, profit by the example.
